Susah dan senang : Merantau ke Deli

Sebelum

Pergilah!"

Things change with time, people change with so many reason and sometimes reason that are hard to swallow, bitter..and the sweeteness and excitement of love will just fade away. This a an extract from : Merantau ke Deli by Hamka (2002)Maybe some of us have read this book but I just finished it today after spending two day concentrating only on this book :-)

It happens everywhere in every culture and love and marriage is a sacred bonding that need to be build each day not only the first 7 months or 7 years..but forever. I have the courage to finish up this book not because of the thickness (181 pages) but it reminds me of my own friend who are still in this chaos of finding a solution to bring back the light to their marriage, at the beginning everything was so perfect with rainbows of colours and now there are only dark cloud and waiting for a disaster.

This is a good book as a guide in not only marriage but also culture where people sometimes blindly follow and push themselves hard just to please these unreasonable expectation.

I have read that book long time ago but vividly could recall the story... A sad one too...

For that friend of yours, just ask whether they search for someone in someone else... What they think is love, or is it something else?

kak nong,
yes, it is a sad story and i like the courage and patience of the wife.

as for my friend, it was the hubby who started the flame right after they got married..he involved with a married woman whose mother is also like that. She's my chilhood friend, i've known her for 21 yrs.I was there with her thru all her major event and the worst part is he knew that guy thru me..the hubby is similar to Leman in the story, almost 80 % plus he's also Minang. sorry to say this..

sue ...

I read this book looong time ago in std six (my cousin was reading it for her class at the time). I am sure I did not fully understand the message of the book (I did, however, understand the story). He was weak, and easily succumb to his family's pressure.

With poligamy being legal and practiced the way it is now, ALL married women and women entering into a marriage should expect this at some point in their lives. How is this different from being married in the west? Your spouse may still cheat on you - the difference is that cheating is considered bad and shameful and most importantly, can cost you in divorce court.

TW,
yess..its no walk in the park but don't be scared and don't think too much about the bad side..just enjoy the moment and pray that everything will go smoothly. marriage is a journey not a destination :-)

mobb,
memang sedih dan menyayat hati.. tapi itulah realiti kehidupan, bukan macam citer bollywood..semuanya happy ending.
masa kat sekolah dulu tak berkesempatan nak baca buku2 dari nusantara so sekarang ni the rite time..i have ample time for myself now

delicate flower,
i think the main character is too weak as a family man where outsides forces especially from relatives were too strong and influencing his judgement.

there is nothing wrong with poligamy ;-) as long as men can be fair and equal and don't try to abuse it.it is not a simple pleasure opporunity but a big and hard burden.

maklang,
cuba cari kat kedai buku kat area masjid india, kdg2 kat second hand bookstore pun ada.

simah,
try kat amazon.com..banyak masa la ni, maklumlah keja rumah tak payah buat..apalagi buat keja sendiri lagi.

mobb,
kita belajar dari kesedihan dan kejatuhan yg pada masa yg sama mendewasakan kita..mcm krit session jugak, kena hentam tapi kena tengok positive side

Kak Sue..
thanks for reminding me of Hamka's work. It's been so long since i last read his writing, was introduced to him by my mom -she's crazy 'bout him!
Merantau ke Deli is particularly close to my heart, my dad's Minang and my mom's Javanese..maybe that's part of the reason, heh? :)
